Green power bids flooding in to BC Hydro

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

Independent producers are expecting to flood BC Hydro with offers of green electricity for the 2008 call for clean power. BC Hydro could be looking at five times the 5,000 gigawatt hours of new green power it was seeking when it opened the call process earlier this year — and the independents are speculating that the bid price for each new megawatt hour of power will be substantially higher than the last call in 2006.

…Independent Power Producers association of British Columbia president Steve Davis described the call as competitive, saying the sheer volume of interest guarantees that Hydro’s customers — the people of B.C. — are getting the best price on new sources of electricity. “It’s certainly competitive, 169 projects registered [earlier this year] to bid,” Davis said in an interview. “BC Hydro’s target is 5,000 gigawatt hours [but] I think they will receive something in the order of 25,000 gigawatt hours.”

Run of river hydro and wind power projects are expected to comprise the bulk of the bids.

Debate Over Private Power in BC Continues

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

CBC British Columbia

CBC reporter Curt Petrovich reports on the debate over Private Power in B.C. The audio clip (link below) profiles the various points of view on this contentious debate ending with Dr. Marc Jaccard’s pro-IPP comments.

Jaccard recently published the results of his independent review titled: Assessing BC Electricity Policy: Peer Review, of two controversial 2007 documents: ‘Liquid Gold’ by John Calvert and ‘Lost in Transmission’ by Marvin Shaffer. In his review, Jaccard disproved the critiques of IPP opponents, namely the above documents, and validated the BC Energy Plan.

Green Investors Confident Despite Financial Storm

GLOBE-Net
October 31, 2008

A report published in October by Deutsche Bank’s Asset Management division argues that despite the current market downturn, the accelerating pace of global warming will force governments to invest more heavily in climate change technologies. “Unlike the initial outbursts of interest in climate change from 1990 through 1992, which faded in the face of a financial crisis and recession, we believe that climate change investing in the early 21st century, based upon solid science, is poised to make a very different impact as governments look for ways to stabilize economies and promote energy security,” writes Deutsche Bank. But it won’t be smooth sailing for everyone. According to The Globe and Mail, many analysts expect a wholesale consolidation in the renewable energy sector as weaker firms drop by the wayside and stronger ones take advantage of strong balance sheets to make acquisitions. Overall, the renewable energy sector may not be as adversely affected by the worldwide credit crunch. The industry has strong support from venture capitalists looking for financial gains and consumers who want an environmentally-friendly planet.
