  • The governing B.C. Liberal Party leads the opposition B.C. New Democratic Party, according to a survey by Environics Research Group. Among decided voters in B.C., 47 per cent say they would vote for the B.C. Liberals. That’s about the same vote share they pulled in 2005. The New Democratic Party trails at 36 per cent. That represents a drop of six points from their popular vote in 2005. Link to article


  • “… small hydro projects may, like wind, qualify for a modest premium compared to conventional fossil-fuel-power electricity.”

Former Schwarzenegger cabinet secretary Terry Tamminen comments on how Independent power producers in British Columbia may get a break from California regulators as electric utilities in the state scramble to meet new quotas for renewable power. And run-of-river power may yet qualify as green power - even though the state Senate recently ignored entreaties from utilities to include it as renewable power. Link to article


  • “It has become increasingly clear that the administration’s central theme — not to mention its pitch to key lawmakers — is that energy-related legislative priorities are based not only on environmental merits but on their ability to create jobs.”

Reference to the Obama administration using Earth Day for launching another all-out effort to sell the American public and key lawmakers on “green jobs” as the solution for the United States’ environmental and economic woes. As White House Council on Environmental Quality adviser Van Jones says “There’s a wingspan on these jobs goes from GED to Ph.D.” Jones added, “The administration is committed that green jobs be good jobs, and there’s a strong commitment to make sure that it actually happens.” Link to article


  • “The possibilities of sustainable energy are enormous…[U. S. President Barack] Obama’s plan in America has a potential of creating two million green jobs in two years. Our equivalent in Canada is 200,000 jobs within two years, if we had a green economic recovery plan. There’s job potential for everyone.”

Guy Dauncey, president of the B.C. Sustainable Energy Association, commenting on the momentum building for renewable energy while other sectors have contracted or slowed. Link to article

Kim Warburton, a spokesperson for GE Canada commenting on the growing environmental consciousness of individuals and corporations has opened up a window of opportunity for businesses to make money in the broad and loosely defined green sphere, particularly as the automotive sector, one of the pillars of the Canadian economy, begins to crumble.
