Door Not Shut on Clean, Renewable Power- Energy Minister

According to Blair Lekstrom, BC’s Minister of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, rumours about the death of BC’s independent power industry may be greatly exaggerated.

In a letter published in the Vancouver Province on Wednesday, August 5, Lekstrom says that “The BCUC has not shut the door on clean, renewable energy. In fact, the Utilities Commission just accepted four electricity purchase agreements for the successful biomass projects in Phase one of B.C. Hydro’s Bionergy Call for Power.

The Minister also says that “We support B.C. Hydro’s plan to replace the firm energy supply from the Burrard Thermal Plant with clean, renewable energy.” The BCUC decision included the notion that BC Hydro would continue to rely on the old, gas-fired plant as a backup power supply. The government’s 2007 BC Energy Plan calls for the plant to be phased out by 2014.

The letter was sent in response to an earlier column by Province writer Michael Smyth.
