BC Throne Speech: Green Energy A “Cornerstone of British Columbia’s Climate Action Plan

August 27, 2009

Tuesday’s Speech From The Throne was very good news for independent power producers in British Columbia. It reaffirmed the Provincial Government’s strong support for renewable energy and clarified that the British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC) will receive “specific direction” to phase out the Burrard Thermal Power Plant. The Commission will also be directed to act on both the BC Energy Plan and Climate Action Plan, which aim to reduce greenhouse gases and support development of clean, renewable energy.

“This is very good news for our company and for BC’s independent power producers,” says Syntaris Power Corp. President and CEO Robert Fraser. “It provides us with certainty that the government is taking concrete action to ensure the continuing development of green energy in the province. That’s good for the environment, for the economy and for the people of British Columbia.”

Delivered by BC’s Lieutenant-Governor The Honourable Steven L. Point OBC, on August 25, The Throne Speech sheds some more light on the government’s plans for renewable energy and the important impact it expects it to have on the environmental and economic future of the province. In its speech, the province promises that “…British Columbia will take every step necessary to become a clean energy powerhouse, as indicated in the BC Energy Plan.”

Other important statements about clean, renewable energy delivered in The Throne Speech are:

  • Green energy will be a cornerstone of British Columbia’s climate action plan.
  • We will build on past successes with new strategies aimed at developing new clean, renewable power as a competitive advantage to stimulate new investment, industry and employment.
  • While these forms of power require greater investment, in the long run, they will produce exponentially high economic returns to our province, environmental benefits to our planet and jobs throughout British Columbia.
  • New energy producers will be looking for long-term investments leveraged thorough long-term power contracts that give them a competitive edge.
  • Further, this government will capitalize on the world’s desire and need for clean energy, for the benefit of all British Columbians.
  • Electricity self-sufficiency and clean, renewable power generation will be integral to our effort to fight global warming.
  • Phasing out Burrard Thermal is a critical component of B.C.’s greenhouse gas reduction strategy.
