Kinskuch Hydro Project Receives Go Ahead for Environmental Assessment Process

Friday, August 7th, 2009

Vancouver, British Columbia—Syntaris Power Corporation announced today it has obtained a Section 11 Order from the BC Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) for the Kinskuch Hydro Project, a run of river project with storage capability in northwestern BC. This Order establishes the formal scope, procedures and methods for carrying out the project’s environmental assessment. The Application Information Requirements, once approved, sets out in detail the environmental, socio-economic and other related studies that must be completed to obtain an environmental assessment certificate.

The Kinskuch Hydro Project is a renewable energy project being developed by Syntaris Power Corporation and expected to generate an estimated 76 MW of energy. The project proposal is currently under consideration in the 2008 BC Hydro Call for Clean Power. The Kinskuch River Project will connect to the existing 138kV BC Hydro line between Meziadin and New Aiyansh.

“The Section 11 Order keeps momentum pushing forward in the development of the Kinskuch Hydro Project. The environmental assessment is an essential component to the project and Syntaris is committed to following the guidelines/recommendations in the order as outlined by the EAO,” says Robert Fraser, President and CEO of Syntaris Power Corporation.

More information regarding the environmental assessment process can be found on the EAO website.

BC government response to BCUC decision welcomed by BC’s clean energy sector

Thursday, July 30th, 2009

IPPBC News Release

B.C. Energy Minister Blair Lekstrom’s reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to more clean, renewable energy in his response to a B.C. Utilities Commission decision on BC Hydro’s Long Term Acquisition Plan (LTAP) is welcomed by BC’s clean energy producers along with other environmental and industry organizations.

The BCUC on Monday rejected the LTAP as being deficient in several respects. The decision included the opinion that the antiquated gas‐fired Burrard Thermal Plant in Metro Vancouver should be used to produce even more energy than was planned by BC Hydro – an amount that would effectively eliminate the need for renewable power developments while making the plant the largest producer of greenhouse gases (GHGs) in the province.

In several media interviews, Minister Lekstrom said retaining Burrard Thermal as a long term
generator is simply “not in the cards” and pointed to his government’s 2007 Energy Plan and its goal of achieving electricity self‐sufficiency for B.C. by 2016 through the development of new, renewable energy projects. The Energy Plan also calls for Burrard Thermal to be downgraded by 2014. These policies support the government’s 2008 Climate Action Plan which targets a 33% reduction in GHGs by 2020.
